Facebook declared on Tuesday that the social media company will be building a more privacy-focused social platform making sure that the user data across all its platforms is secure that include Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp as well.
Speaking at its flagship event F8 in San Jose, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg accepted that there have been a few privacy concerns related to its platform in past, but he affirmed at the same time that the company will remain committed to bringing privacy-focused changes and “starting a new chapter”.
“As the world gets bigger and more connected, we need that sense of intimacy more than ever. So that is why I believe the future is private. This is the next chapter for our services… We don’t exactly have the strongest reputation on privacy right now, to put it lightly. But I’m committed to doing this well and starting a new chapter for our product,” he said.
To mark the foundation of this new privacy focused chapter, Zuckerberg unveiled a revamped Facebook app. According to the new renovation in the app, user will now be finding a Group tab at the centre of the app and will be able to see the content from Groups in their News Feed more often. Users will also be getting more indication from Facebook for discovering and joining new groups. Moreover, a new feature will help the users to join specific types of group such as an employer can post job opening in job groups.
“Basically, now you’re going to be able to see and connect with your friends everywhere and you’re also going to be able to see and connect with groups that you care about,” Zuckerberg said. “It all adds up to this feeling that groups are now at the heart of the experience, just as much as your friends and family are.”
The revamp will also allow users in messaging and sharing the news with other members within the group easily. A new “Meet New Friends” feature will allow users in starting new friendships.
As far as the new redesigned app for mobile is concerned, users can download it as an update for mobile devices. The desktop redesigned application however will take some time to be released and will be available “in the next few months.”
Mark Zuckerberg also spoke about six principals that his company will focus on in the future including private interactions, encryption, reduced permanence (disappearing messages), safety, interoperability (easy and safe communication between different platforms), and secure data storage.
“Over the next few years we are going to build more of our services around these ideas,” said Zuckerberg. “This isn’t just about building features – we need to change a lot of the different ways that we run this company today.”
